The NICB stated in their report that there are several ways that you can help prevent your vehicle from being stolen: 1) Uses common sense! Remove keys from the ignition, lock doors and windows and park in well-lit areas; 2) Warning devices, such as visible and audible alarms. Aftermarket alarms are available for all makes and models of cars. Visual devices include column collars, steering wheel and brake locks; 3) Immobilizing Devices prevent thieves from bypassing the ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. Most aftermarket alarms have a starter disable, but you can also install kill switches and fuel pump disables; 4) Tracking Devices use GPS technology to not only track and locate stolen vehicles, but can also alert you to when they’re being stolen. You can use your computer, and usually your smart phone, to use the GPS device. You can find out more at the NICB website, NICB.org.
It’s interesting to note how many pickup trucks and Japanese cars are on this list. Also, notice there are no muscle cars or exotics on this list. I guess they are too easy to spot, while the others blend into traffic. While come vehicles are stolen for a “joy ride”, others are parted out, or shipped intact out of the country.
