Here in the good ol’ USA, we are far behind Europe and Asia in the use of dash cams. Overseas, almost everyone has one, but other than commercial use, they are just starting to catch on for the general driving public. They can provide fun stuff to post on your social media accounts, but provide a much more important benefit: recording accidents!
Many times, after a collision, you will find the other party all of a sudden accusing you! You know you were not at fault, but there they are, explaining to the authorities how you caused the collision. If the police can’t determine who was at fault, your insurance company might not support your version, or in the best case scenario, assign equal blame. Either way, your insurance can be affected.
Your saving grace will be an actual recording of the incident that you can show the authorities on scene, either by playback through the dashcam monitor or byWi-Fi to our smart phone. If the other party is to blame, and you can show that, it will be recorded that way in the officer’s report, helping you with your insurance claim against the other driver. Of course, you can also record comets flashing across the night sky or a herd of cows on the freeway!
Dashcams come in one-channel systems, which only record ahead of the vehicle, or two-channel systems, which record both ahead and behind of the vehicle. The rear-facing camera can also be used as an interior camera, perfect for Uber, Lyft or other passenger-carrying vehicles. Dashcams come with micro-SD cards, and record in a continuous loop. Once the card memory is filled, the camera will begin to record over itself. In case of accident, the G-force system min the dashcam will preserve the file from being overwritten. You can also manually select a file to save.
